Breakdown of the 03′ Draft

Round 1; Pick 13 : Ty Warren / DT / Texas A&M

Where did he rank? : 7th (nfldraftcountdown.com)

Notable busts ranked higher : Jonathan Sullivan, Jimmy Kennedy, Kenny Peterson.

NFL career stats : Total tackles (195) / Sacks (9.5) / Games (57)

Present Grade : A

Analysis : Warren has been the most underrated player on this team, and when he doesn’t play it shows. Warren has only gotten better, working on his speed and becoming more of a pass rusher. Warren and other first round DE Seymour make for a dynamic duo on the outside.

Other notes : Moved to DE to fit the 3-4 defensive scheme.

Round 2; Pick 36 : Eugene Wilson / CB / Illinois

Where did he rank? : 5th (nfldraftcountdown.com)

Notable busts ranked higher : Sammy Davis, Andre Woolfolk.

NFL career stats : Total tackles (168) / INTS (9) / Games (51)

Present Grade : B

Analysis : Wilson played right away and started off very strong, however over the last two years he has been in a major slump, last year he let up multiple big plays and never filled the void Harrison left and this year he has only performed in 4 games.

Other notes : Moved to S after being drafted.

Round 2; Pick 45 : Bethel Johnson / WR / Texas A&M

Where did he rank? : 15th (nfldraftcountdown.com)

Who did we miss? : Anquan Boldin, Nate Burleson, Brandon Lloyd, Doug Gabriel, Arnaz Battle.

NFL career stats : Receptions (36) / Yards (579) / TD (4) / Games (44)

Present Grade : F

Analysis : Bethel was a very surprising pick at the time, many thought he was a 4th or 5th rounder. We took him for his speed, and that’s all he had. He was a good KR, but never amounted to anything at WR.

Other notes : Traded for DT Jonathan Sullivan this past offseason.

Current team : Minnesota Vikings
——————————————————————————-

Round 4; Pick 117 : Dan Klecko / DT / Temple

Where did he rank? : 13th (nfldraftcountdown.com)

Who did we miss? : Nobody, he was best DT there.

NFL career stats : Total tackles (35) / Sacks (2) / Games (36)

Present Grade : D-

Analysis : Nobody really had high hopes for Klecko, some moments he would show a lot of promise and the next he wouldn’t even be noticed on the field.

Other notes : His dad was great for the Jets. Klecko was cut and replaced by Mike Wright and Le Kevin Smith.

Current team : Indianapolis Colts

Round 4; Pick 120 : Asante Samuel / CB / Central Florida

Where did he rank? : 20th (nfldraftcountdown.com)

Notable busts ranked higher : Sammy Davis, Andre Woolfolk, Dennis Weathersby, Bryan Scott, Shane Walton, Kevin Garrett.

NFL career stats : Total tackles (164) / INTS (9) / Pass deflected (36) / Games (57)

Present Grade : A

Analysis : What can you say about this kid? What a player, and he’ll get paid this offseason. Drafted in the fourth round nobody was sure what this kid could do, then against the Jets he helped us win the game with an INT. He has stepped up at CB with the lose of Ty Law. Will he stay? Who knows.

Other notes : Free agent this offseason
—————————————————————————-

Round 5; Pick 164 : Dan Koppen / C / Boston College

Where did he rank? : 5th (nfldraftcountdown.com)

Notable busts ranked higher : Al Johnson, Bruce Nelson, Austin King.

NFL career stats : Games (51) / Games Started (50)

Present Grade : A+

Analysis : Wow, what a pick, uh? Koppen has started since, a lot of teams passed on this kid and now he’s the best center in the NFL.

Other notes : Just got a his rookie contract extended. Steal of the entire draft.
——————————————————————————–

Round 6; Pick 201 : Kilff Kingsbury / QB / Texas Tech

Where did he rank? : 14th (nfldraftcountdown.com)

Who did we miss? : Tony Romo

NFL career stats : Completions (1) / Attempts (2) / Yards (17) / Games (1)

Present Grade : D-

Analysis : Some people were excited about him, because of the stats he put up at Texas Tech. Never did anything.

Other notes : Holds almost every passing record at Texas Tech

Current team : Cologne Centrurions (NFL Europe)
—————————————————————————–

Round 7; Pick 234 : Spencer Nead / TE / Brigham Young

Notable busts ranked higher : Jerome McDougle, Michael Haynes.

NFL career stats : Total tackles (69) / Sacks (6.5) / Games (4

Present Grade : B –

Analysis : Tully hasn’t gotten better, and is now finally getting a change to play in this league. He can really rush the QB, and will continue to get some reps in.

Other notes : Moved to OLB, has come on of late.
———————————————————————————-

Round 7; Pick 243 : Ethan Kelley / DT / Baylor

Where did he rank? : N/A (nfldraftcountdown.com)
